TXDOT Copano Bay Pier Removal
Project Description:
The scope of work for TXDOT consists of the removal of the original (1931) SH 35 bridge over Copano Bay, Texas. The 1931 SH 35 bridge over Copano Bay was converted to a recreational fishing pier in the 1960s. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey damaged the old bridge/fishing pier beyond repair and it was condemned. Russell Marine’s contract with TXDOT was to remove the remaining 457 spans of the old bridge, remove the two bait shacks at either end of the old bridge/fishing pier and dispose of all materials. The old bridge/fishing pier was built with 14” diameter timber piles, 6” x 18” x 20’ rough sawn timber beams and a 6” thick concrete deck and curb. Russell Marine removed the old bridge/fishing pier and disposed of 7,815 tons of concrete and 3,250 tons of timber. Russell Marine completed the project early, using only 71% of the time allowed.
